Title: Impression in Hawaii
Inspiration for this dress came from a recent tour of Maui and the Big Island in 2010. The purpose of the project was to capture the formidable forces of both destruction and rebirth of volcanoes, especially through the flow of lava. The red background that symbolizes the natural forces contrasts with the yellow wavering texture to emphasis the ardent symbolism of a volcano¡¯s power. The yellow streams signify the flowing the volcanic ranges and create a sense of motion with the rhythmical winding lines. The opening in the back signifies the throat from which the lava flows. The irregular handkerchief hemline emphasizes the power in the heat and flames of a volcano. Tie-dyeing was applied. The irregular bias pieces of silk organza with tucks on the surface were joined together by draping, creating the dress shape. This paper was supported by Research Funds of Mokpo National University in 2009.
